Kinetic Sculpture

This moving sculpture was created for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in collaboration with the team at Kolar Design.  The shapes are all created with layers of acrylic and translucent vinyls, and the motion is controlled by a single motor driving a series of belts, pulleys, gears and offset cams.  Because the mechanical elements are hidden behind the clean white back panel, the entire sculpture in built to pivot on a single hinge point to allow access for maintenance.  In addition to the physical movement of the shapes, a motion sensor triggers animated LED lights around the perimeter of the case to cycle through a series of complementary colors.  While no one wants to spend much time in a hospital, this element adds a calm yet playful distraction for patients and families visiting the hospital.
